Llanelli sits in Carmarthenshire, which had 187,897 residents at the 2021 census. The county has one of the stronger modelled solar yields in this part of Wales. Solar Cymru is an independent referral service, so we cannot fit panels, but we can explain what to check first.

Output on Llanelli roofs

PVGIS models a south-facing roof at 35 degrees near Llanelli at about 1,040 kWh a year for each kWp. A typical 4.5 kWp system of around 12 panels would therefore make roughly 4,700 kWh. That matches the Cardiff figure closely.

Sizing depends on your use and roof space, not just the sun. Our post on how many solar panels you need explains how to match an array to your bills. A typical home system covers roughly 20 to 30 square metres of roof, so measure your usable space too. In addition, our yield guide for Wales covers pitch and shade.

A flatter or steeper slope costs less than most people expect. At Cardiff, a 15-degree roof gives about 976 kWh per kWp. A 60-degree roof gives about 993, against 1,042 at 35 degrees. Therefore, an odd pitch rarely rules solar out.

Planning: council land and national park land

Carmarthenshire County Council decides most applications. However, part of the county lies inside Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. The National Park Authority is the planning authority for that land, while the council keeps its other services.

The Welsh domestic permitted development rules name conservation areas and World Heritage Sites, not national parks. Even so, a householder in a park should ask the authority before committing, because the rules may change by site. Our post on solar panels in Welsh national parks explains who to ask.

Cadw lists 28 conservation areas in the county’s planning area. Park land is listed apart, and one area carries the Llanelli name. In a conservation area, a wall facing a highway needs planning permission for panels. Since an Article 4 direction can also remove rights, check the register.

Keeping a system working

Solar panels need little care. Rain cleans panels tilted at 15 degrees or more, while trimming nearby trees protects output. However, dusty sites and shallow roofs may need occasional cleaning.

MCS has a care plan. It asks you to look at the panels from the ground, read the inverter display and watch your output. For the longer list, read our post on solar panel maintenance and cleaning.

Ground-mounted arrays differ. They are easy to clean, yet they need more care against rodents and physical damage. For example, a garden array must also meet strict size limits. Ask the council first.

The grid and your export payment

National Grid Electricity Distribution’s South Wales area includes this stretch of the coast, though its report does not name Llanelli. Confirm your operator by postcode if you can. A system up to 16 A per phase uses G98, and your installer notifies the operator within 28 days.

Export pay comes from a Smart Export Guarantee tariff, and suppliers set the rates. You need an export meter and an MCS certificate. Our grid and export guide for Wales explains the application.

Costs and funding

Official data points to roughly £6,500 to £8,800 for a typical 4.5 kWp home system. VAT stays at 0% until 31 March 2027. Savings come to around £450 to £500 or more a year, so the sums give a fair basis for comparing quotes.

Home owners can look at Green Homes Wales loans. Eligible households can ask about Warm Homes Nest. The Wales solar funding guide lists the conditions.

Getting Llanelli quotes

Complete the form with your postcode and roof details. As a result, we can refer your enquiry to MCS-certified installers. They arrange the survey and send written quotes.

Because homes sit close to other towns, you may find cover from firms in neighbouring areas. Read about solar installers in Swansea, solar quotes around Neath and solar panel installers in Bridgend. The overview of solar panel installation in Wales explains the full process.

Frequently asked questions

Does a national park affect solar panels in Carmarthenshire?

Part of Carmarthenshire lies inside Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, and the park authority is the planning authority for that land. The Welsh domestic rules do not name national parks, but ask the authority before you commit.

How much will 12 panels make near Llanelli?

A typical 4.5 kWp system of around 12 panels would make roughly 4,700 kWh a year. That assumes a south-facing roof and the PVGIS figure of about 1,040 kWh per kWp. Shade and roof direction will change it.

How often should I clean my panels?

Rarely. Rain cleans panels tilted at 15 degrees or more. Keep nearby trees trimmed, check the inverter display, and ask your installer for written maintenance advice.

Which council handles planning for Llanelli?

Carmarthenshire County Council. Cadw records 28 conservation areas in its planning area, including one named Llanelli. Check the council register for Article 4 directions.
