The Bridgend council area had 145,488 residents in 2021, and many of them wonder what solar would cost and save. The answer depends on your roof and your habits. However, the local facts help you judge a quote. Solar Cymru is an independent guide that refers enquiries to MCS-certified installers.

Is Bridgend a good place for solar?

PVGIS models a south-facing Bridgend roof at 35 degrees at about 1,050 kWh a year for each kWp. That figure is one of the stronger ones in the South East. A 4.5 kWp system would make around 4,700 kWh.

Your roof matters more than the postcode. East or west slopes make about 15 to 20 percent less than south, and north slopes make roughly half. Our yield guide for Wales explains pitch, direction and shade.

Pairing panels with a battery changes the picture again. For more on that, read our post on whether a solar battery is worth it. It compares costs, export rates and bill savings side by side.

Planning with Bridgend County Borough Council

Bridgend County Borough Council decides planning applications here. Most house-roof installations need no application, because permitted development covers them. The panels must stay within 20 cm of the roof slope and below the highest point of the roof.

Cadw’s dataset records 16 conservation areas in the Bridgend planning area, including one called Bridgend Town Centre. In a conservation area, panels on a wall that fronts a highway need planning permission. Moreover, a council can remove permitted development rights with an Article 4 direction.

Flats, listed buildings and ground-mounted arrays follow different rules. A garden array, for example, must be at least 5 m from the highway and no more than 9 square metres. Our Wales planning guide sets out each case.

Grid details for Bridgend

National Grid Electricity Distribution covers South Wales, and its report names Bridgend. Single-phase systems up to 3.68 kW follow the quick G98 route. Your installer sends the paperwork within 28 days of commissioning.

Larger systems apply under G99 first. The operator may need to strengthen the local network, and sometimes it asks the customer to contribute. Therefore, raise the grid question early with each installer you meet.

Choosing an installer you can trust

MCS certification matters because the Smart Export Guarantee requires it for systems up to 50 kW. Our explainer on MCS certification and your quote covers the paperwork. In addition, ask about deposits, because a deposit above 25 percent breaks the RECC code.

Under the redeveloped MCS scheme, installers must buy approved financial protection for customers. That cover lasts at least six years from installation. It protects you if the installer goes bust, retires or refuses to fix a fault.

Rooftop birds can also cause trouble. Read about bird-proofing solar panels before you sign. Ask the installer to fit any mesh before nesting starts, never over an active nest.

The cost of solar in Bridgend

Government data shows installed costs of roughly £1,400 to £1,950 per kW in 2025-26. A typical 4.5 kWp home system therefore costs about £6,500 to £8,800. Meanwhile, the Energy Saving Trust puts the average at £7,600.

Home solar carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% after that. Households save around £450 to £500 or more a year, depending on use. Ofgem’s medium household figure is 2,500 kWh of electricity a year, so a 4.5 kWp system can cover much of it over a year. Still, only the power you use at home earns the full bill saving. Owner-occupiers can also look at Green Homes Wales loans of £1,000 to £25,000, subject to credit checks and funding.

Frequently asked questions

How much sun does Bridgend get compared with other Welsh towns?

PVGIS models about 1,050 kWh a year per kWp on a south-facing roof at 35 degrees. That is above Wrexham at roughly 970 and close to Cardiff at 1,040. Your own roof direction matters more than the town.

Is there a conservation area in Bridgend town centre?

Yes. Cadw's dataset includes a Bridgend Town Centre conservation area, one of 16 in the council area. Panels on a wall facing a highway there need planning permission.

What should I ask an installer about my deposit?

Ask how the installer protects the deposit and whether the installer joins a consumer code such as RECC or HIES. The redeveloped MCS scheme also requires financial protection, with a claims excess capped at £250.

Is the Smart Export Guarantee guaranteed money?

No. Suppliers set the rates, and every tariff must pay above zero. Compare tariffs, and remember that using your own power usually saves more than selling it.
