Rhondda Cynon Taf had 237,651 residents at the 2021 census, and Pontypridd lies within it. This page looks at what the council area means for your roof, your planning checks and your quotes. However, we do not install. Solar Cymru is an independent guide, so we do not install panels ourselves.
Roof direction comes first
PVGIS models a south-facing roof near Pontypridd at 35 degrees at about 970 kWh a year for each kWp. A 4.5 kWp system would therefore make around 4,400 kWh. That is similar to Wrexham and lower than the Cardiff figure.
Direction changes the result. South-east and south-west roofs give about 95 percent of the south figure. East and west roofs give around 80 percent, while north-facing roofs give only about half. As a result, the Energy Saving Trust does not recommend north-facing panels.
Our post on solar on east-west and north-facing roofs shows when a split array makes sense. In addition, the Wales solar yield guide adds detail on pitch and shade. Pitch matters less than most owners expect, because a shallow or steep slope costs only a little output.
Conservation areas, listed homes and the national park
Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council handles most planning decisions. Part of the area lies inside Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, and the park authority decides planning there. National parks do not appear in the Welsh domestic rules. Even so, you should ask the authority first.
Cadw’s dataset holds 16 conservation areas for the council area. It names Pontypridd Town Centre, Graigwen and Taff for Pontypridd. In each, panels on a wall facing a highway need planning permission. Meanwhile, Article 4 directions can remove other rights, so check the register.
A listed home needs planning permission, and consent for listed buildings is likely. Our post on solar rules for listed homes walks through the application. For general rules, use the planning permission guide for Wales.
Planning to sell your home
Many owners ask what panels mean for a future sale. Because we have no reliable source on whether owned panels add value, we make no claim either way. Our post on selling a house with solar panels covers the practical steps.
Leased roofs are different. Most mortgage lenders require their consent to any lease, including a lease of roof space under a rent-a-roof deal. Therefore, talk to your lender and conveyancer before you agree to one.
Keep the paperwork tidy. Store the MCS certificate, the commissioning record and the warranty documents together. Since the installer also hands over a maintenance schedule, file that with them for any future owner.
The grid and your costs
National Grid Electricity Distribution’s South Wales area covers this region, though its report does not list Pontypridd by name. Check your operator by postcode. Small systems follow G98, so your installer sends the paperwork within 28 days of commissioning. Larger systems need G99 approval before they switch on. Batteries count towards that rating, so tell the installer if you plan to add one later.
Official figures suggest roughly £6,500 to £8,800 for a typical 4.5 kWp home system. VAT stays at 0% to 31 March 2027, then moves to 5%. Expect savings near £450 to £500 or more each year.
Support exists, yet it has conditions. Warm Homes Nest helps eligible households, and Green Homes Wales lends to owner-occupiers who meet its rules. Our guide to solar funding in Wales lists both.

Complete the enquiry form with your postcode and roof details. Because we work from your postcode, we refer your enquiry to MCS-certified installers, and they arrange the survey.
