The Merthyr Tydfil council area had 58,836 residents in 2021. It also has one of the lower modelled yields we list. We want to be straight about that, because a fair quote starts with honest numbers. Solar Cymru is an independent guide and referral service, so we do not install panels.
What a lower yield means for your roof
PVGIS models a south-facing Merthyr roof at 35 degrees at about 940 kWh a year for each kWp. A 4.5 kWp system would make around 4,200 kWh. That is below Cardiff by roughly a tenth, yet the panels still produce plenty.
The gap matters most for payback. Each kWh you use at home saves the unit price, so a lower yield stretches the repayment period a little. For example, the Energy Saving Trust puts mid Wales payback near 9 to 10 years, though it only modelled Aberystwyth.
Shade deserves attention on any site. Ask for the shade factor in the written performance estimate, since a lower yield leaves less room for losses. Our yield guide for Wales explains how installers calculate it.
Conservation areas and national park land
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is the planning authority for most of the area. Part of it lies inside Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, where the park authority handles planning. The council keeps its other services.
Cadw’s dataset records eight conservation areas here. It names Town Centre, Thomastown, Morgantown and Cyfarthfa. In any conservation area, panels on a wall facing a highway need planning permission, and Article 4 directions can remove other rights.
The Welsh domestic rules do not name national parks. Still, the park authority invites enquiries, so ask before you commit. Our post on solar panels in Wales’s national parks explains what to ask and when.
Could a garden array work?
Some owners think about a garden array when the roof is shaded. A ground-mounted array counts as permitted development only within tight limits. There can be one array, no part above 4 m, and no more than 9 square metres of panel.
It must sit at least 5 m from the highway. Within 5 m of a boundary it cannot rise above 2 m. In a conservation area it cannot sit between the highway and the house. Bigger arrays need an application, as our post on ground-mounted solar planning in Wales explains.
Ground arrays suit those who want easy cleaning. However, they need more care against rodents and physical damage. Weigh that against the extra cabling and groundwork in the quote.
Free panels and funding
The UK Government has no dedicated solar grant. Our guide to free solar panels in Wales separates real support from marketing claims. Warm Homes Nest may include solar for eligible households, though it never guarantees it.
Owner-occupiers can ask about Green Homes Wales loans. The Welsh budget for Nest in 2026-27 is £37 million, and funding is demand led. Therefore, apply early, and read the Wales solar funding guide first.
Grid and costs
National Grid Electricity Distribution’s South Wales area covers this part of South Wales, though its report does not list Merthyr by name. Your installer notifies the operator under G98 within 28 days, or applies first under G99 for larger systems.
Official data points to roughly £6,500 to £8,800 for a typical 4.5 kWp home system. VAT is 0% until 31 March 2027. Savings come to around £450 to £500 or more a year.
