Newport has 159,592 residents, according to the 2021 census count for the council area. Solar suits many homes here, since the local yield sits near the top of the Welsh range. Solar Cymru is an independent referral service, so this page explains the facts and leaves the installing to certified firms.
Read on for output figures, planning checks, grid details and costs. After that, you can ask for quotes.
Newport’s solar yield and system size
PVGIS models a south-facing Newport roof at 35 degrees at about 1,030 kWh a year for each kWp. A typical 4.5 kWp system of around 12 panels would make roughly 4,600 kWh.
Sizing balances roof space, budget and how much power you use. Our guide on how many solar panels you need walks through the sums. In short, a bigger array earns more, but the extra panels often get exported at a low rate.
Ofgem’s typical household use is 2,500 kWh a year on a medium, single-rate meter. Therefore, a 4.5 kWp array can out-produce a medium home over a full year. You still buy power at night, so timing matters as much as total output.
Making the most of a battery and an electric car
Households that are out all day often export most of their midday power, while evenings go unserved. A battery stores some for the evening, and an electric car can charge while the sun is out. Our posts on whether a solar battery is worth it and on charging an EV with solar cover both options.
A home battery typically costs £5,000 to £8,000, although prices range from about £2,000 to £10,000. A battery bought with panels usually costs less than one added later. VAT on both is 0% until 31 March 2027.
Be aware that a battery counts towards your connection rating. Combined with panels, it can push a system from G98 into G99. Therefore, ask the installer which route applies before you accept a quote.
Planning and the Newport conservation areas
Newport City Council is the planning authority. Panels on a house roof can usually go up without an application, as long as they stay within 20 cm of the roof slope. Likewise, they must not rise above the highest part of the roof.
Cadw’s boundary dataset records 17 conservation areas in the Newport planning area. One carries the name Newport Town Centre. However, if your home sits in a conservation area, you need planning permission for panels on a wall that faces a highway.
Check the council planning register for an Article 4 direction too. Such a direction removes permitted development rights and brings back the need for an application. Our guide to planning permission in Wales explains the other exceptions.
Grid connection through National Grid
National Grid Electricity Distribution runs the electricity network in Newport. Systems up to 16 A per phase, or 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, use the G98 process. The installer commissions first and then sends the paperwork within 28 days.
For larger systems the G99 route applies, so approval comes before commissioning. Sometimes the operator must strengthen the network before a connection can go ahead. Read more in our explainer on telling the network operator about solar.
What to expect on cost and payback
Although prices vary, recent cost data suggests roughly £6,500 to £8,800 for a typical 4.5 kWp home system, including VAT where it applied. Savings are around £450 to £500 or more a year, depending on how much you use yourself. Our solar panel costs post shows how these numbers add up.
Funding has limits, so check which schemes fit. For example, Warm Homes Nest helps eligible low-income households, and Green Homes Wales lends to owner-occupiers. The Wales solar funding guide lists the rules for each.
Requesting Newport quotes
Our short form takes your postcode and roof details. As a result, we can refer your enquiry to MCS-certified installers, and they arrange a survey. Solar Cymru does not install, lend or broker finance.
Because designs differ, compare the written designs, the shade factors and the warranty terms. Neighbouring towns also have their own pages, including solar installers in Cwmbran, solar quotes around Caerphilly and Cardiff solar panel installers. You can start from the main page on solar panel installation in Wales as well.
