Flintshire, the council area that contains Mold, had 154,962 residents at the 2021 Census. Solar Cymru is an independent guide and referral service, not an installer. We pass your enquiry to MCS-certified installers.

Three questions suit Mold. Can an older town house take panels, can solar run a heat pump, and does a free scheme exist? This page answers each one with official sources.

Older buildings and the town conservation area

Cadw’s data records 32 conservation areas in Flintshire. One bears the name Mold. Roof panels on a house often remain permitted development, so you may need no application. However, planning permission applies to a wall that fronts a highway in a conservation area. Flintshire County Council keeps the register that shows any Article 4 direction.

Listed buildings work differently. Permitted development does not apply. Therefore, you need planning permission and probably listed building consent. Cadw says an application can need a heritage impact statement. Older buildings may also need extra roof support. Our article on panels for listed buildings and conservation areas explains the process step by step. Because Green Homes Wales loans do not currently support listed homes, budget for other finance if that applies to you.

What a Mold roof can produce

PVGIS gives about 970 kWh a year for each kWp on a south-facing roof at 35 degrees. A 4 kWp system therefore yields about 3,900 kWh a year. However, roofs facing east or west make about 15 to 20% less. Our solar yield guide explains how to read an MCS performance estimate.

Shade matters too. Power optimisers or microinverters can limit the loss when shade falls on part of an array. Since they add nothing on an unshaded roof, ask whether you need them.

Pairing solar with a heat pump

Solar can power a heat pump, which lowers electricity and heating bills. An air source heat pump costs around £12,000 before grants, according to the Energy Saving Trust. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 for an air-to-water heat pump in England and Wales. However, it funds heat pumps and biomass boilers only, not solar.

Because Welsh rules for outdoor heat pump units changed from 1 June 2026, check them before you fit a unit. Our article on solar panels and heat pumps explains how the two systems share a roof, a meter and a budget.

Free solar and other funding

Many adverts promise free panels, yet no dedicated UK Government solar grant exists. Warm Homes Nest can include solar for eligible households. You must own your home or rent privately, and meet the income and energy rating rules. Solar is only one possible measure, and Nest never guarantees it.

Meanwhile, Warm Homes: Local Grant is England only, so it does not apply in Flintshire. Our article on free solar panels in Wales separates real schemes from sales claims. The solar funding guide lists Nest, Green Homes Wales and the other routes.

Costs and the grid

The usual 4.5 kWp home system costs roughly £6,500 to £8,800 installed. A battery adds about £2,000 to £10,000. VAT on a home installation stays at 0% until 31 March 2027 and is due to become 5% afterwards. Typically, a household with solar saves around £450 to £500 or more a year. That range depends on how much power you use yourself.

Home use beats export on value. For October to December 2026, the Ofgem price cap averages about 26p per kWh. Ofgem’s 2024-25 report found about 4.4p on untied export tariffs. The periods differ, so treat the comparison as a guide. Therefore, daytime use drives most of the saving.

SP Manweb, part of SP Energy Networks, serves North Wales. Because boundaries can vary, check your address with the Energy Networks Association finder. Inverters up to 3.68 kW on a single phase follow G98, and your installer tells the operator within 28 days. Our grid and export guide covers the larger G99 route.
