A coastal town raises its own solar questions. Because the town sits on the sea, birds, boundaries and grid paperwork come up often. This page answers them in turn, using official sources.
Connecting to the grid in Rhyl
SP Energy Networks, through SP Manweb, serves North Wales, and Rhyl falls in that area. Confirm your address with the Energy Networks Association finder. The grid route depends on the inverter size. A combined rating of 16 amps per phase or less follows G98, which is 3.68 kW on a single phase.
Under G98, your installer fits the system first. They then send the installation document to the network operator within 28 days. Larger systems follow G99, and the operator must agree the connection before commissioning. Batteries count towards the rating, so a big battery can tip a small system into G99. Our article on G98 and G99 explained walks through both.
Sometimes the operator must strengthen the network first. In that case, it may ask you to contribute. Ask your installer early, because delays here can hold up a whole project.
Yield and roof direction
PVGIS gives about 960 kWh a year for each kWp on a south-facing roof at 35 degrees. A 4 kWp array would make about 3,800 kWh a year. That sits mid-range for Wales. However, roofs that face east or west make about 15 to 20% less than south. A north roof makes only 53 to 59%.
Since many roofs do not face south, direction deserves attention. Read about east-west and north-facing roofs before you rule a roof out. Our solar yield guide explains the estimate that MCS installers must give you.
Conservation areas and the planning register
Cadw’s data records 33 conservation areas in Denbighshire. It names three for Rhyl: Rhyl Central, Rhyl Seabank and Rhyl River Street. House roof panels often remain within permitted development. However, a wall that fronts a highway in a conservation area needs permission.
Meanwhile, Denbighshire County Council keeps the planning register. It shows whether an Article 4 direction or a planning condition has removed your rights. Check it before you pay a deposit. Denbighshire also shares planning guidance for the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site, which starts at Horseshoe Falls near Llangollen. Our planning permission guide covers the exceptions.
Bird-proofing a seaside roof
Birds can nest under panels. MIS 3002 requires installers to advise on protection from plants and animals, including nesting birds. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects wild birds and nests in use. Therefore, you can fit mesh, but never over a nest in use.
The RSPB advises that solid metal mesh can be safer than wide nylon netting. Fit any mesh before birds start to nest, and check it regularly. Our article on bird-proofing solar panels explains the options and the law.
Costs, savings and funding
Costs for a typical 4.5 kWp home system run at roughly £6,500 to £8,800 installed. Home solar installations pay 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5% is due. Solar households typically save around £450 to £500 or more a year. Savings depend on how much power you use at home, because self-use beats export.
Funding is narrower than many adverts suggest, because Nest has strict rules. Warm Homes Nest helps eligible low-income households. Green Homes Wales offers owner-occupiers interest-free loans of £1,000 to £25,000. Our funding guide lists each route and its limits.
